Moonfruits
Moonfruits est créateur d’un folk contemporain qui adresse notre humanité avec cœur, esprit et émerveillement. Mené par conjoints-complices Alex Millaire et Kaitlin Milroy, Moonfruits s’exprime tant en français qu’en anglais, une réflection de leur jour le jour à Ottawa. Le groupe prône des harmonies parfois envoûtantes, parfois retentissantes sur des arrangements délibérés et propres à chacune de ses univers-chansons, dotés de guitare, banjo, orgue, glockenspiel.
Autant rêveurs que retrousseurs de manches, ils se confrontent face à face au capitalisme déshumanisant et à la catastrophe environnementale avec un message de solidarité tissé à même l’étoffe de leur œuvre.
Moonfruits effleure la décennie de création, passant de la prestation de rue en Ontario et en Europe à de prestigieuses salles d’écoute (Centre national des arts, Place des arts) et festivals (Philadelphia Folk Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, Festival of Small Halls Ontario). Leur album concept villageois, Ste-Quequepart (2017), est lauréat des prix Stingray Rising Star, SOCAN, et Trille Or, avec des tournées de son spectacle mi-conte-mi-chanson au Canada, États-Unis, France, Belgique et Allemagne.
Moonfruits collabore avec des douzaines de groupes canadiens acclamés—du lauréat Juno Wesli au groupe folk Tragedy Ann à l’Orchestre philharmonique de Hamilton—et, en 2021, co-écrit, arrange et joue la musique pour Moby: A Whale of a Tale (Art & Water), produit à même un schooner au port de Toronto. Cette production s’est vu récompensée de quatre prix Dora, incluant la Meilleure performance par un ensemble dans la division Théâtre pour jeunes auditeurs.
Le deuxième album à grand dépouillement de Moonfruits, Salt (2022), offre 12 chansons richement orchestrées qui explorent vivre, rêver et élever un enfant dans une époque de changements climatiques et d’inégalité socio-économique croissante. Elle raconte l’histoire de leurs familles et le genre de communautés qu'ils espèrent aider à bâtir.
Moonfruits craft contemporary folk that addresses our collective humanity with heart, wit, and wonder. Led by partners Alex Millaire and Kaitlin Milroy, Moonfruits pen songs in both French and English, reflecting their bilingual lived experience in their hometown of Ottawa. The band harmonizes over assiduous arrangements of guitar, banjo, chord organ, and glockenspiel, weaving song-worlds that rouse and serenade in equal measure. Theirs is the music of open-minded dreamers and diligent doers, music that confronts dehumanizing capitalism and environmental catastrophe with a rousing message of solidarity, epitomized in their refrain: “we all do well when we all do well.”
Over the past decade, Moonfruits have gone from serenading market-goers as buskers in Ontario and Europe to connecting with audiences in prestigious listening rooms (National Arts Centre, Place des Arts) and festivals (Philadelphia Folk Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, Festival of Small Halls Ontario). Since the release of their début full-length concept album Ste-Quequepart (2017), they have garnered Stingray Rising Star, SOCAN, and Trille Or awards and toured their transportive live show across Canada, the US, France, Belgium, and Germany.
Moonfruits have collaborated with dozens of other acclaimed Canadian groups—from Juno award-winning artist Wesli to folk duo Tragedy Ann to the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra—and recently co-wrote, arranged, and performed music for Art & Water's Moby: A Whale of a Tale, which premiered on a ship in Toronto’s harbour in 2021. This show received four Dora awards, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in the Theatre for Young Audiences division.
Moonfruits’ anticipated sophomore album, Salt (2022), is a lushly orchestrated 12-song suite that explores what it means to the band to live, dream, and raise a child in an era of climate change and deepening socio-economic inequality. It tells the stories of their families and the kinds of communities they hope to help build.
